Shopify Website Development in Delhi: What a Shopify Build Involves in India

Shopify website development means building and customising a Shopify store: a theme, catalogue structure, payments, shipping, apps, SEO and speed. In India, Shopify Payments is not available, so you need a third-party gateway, and Shopify does not create GST-compliant bills, so you need an invoicing app or service. Mindrops is a Shopify partner based in New Delhi.

Key takeaways

  • Decide product options before design: a Shopify product has at most three options and 2,048 variants unless you use an app or line item properties.
  • Cash on delivery is a manual payment method: orders arrive unpaid and you mark them paid, so plan courier remittance reconciliation.
  • Apps and tracking scripts can add JavaScript that slows pages, so audit what each one earns before launch.
  • Import products first, then customers, then historical orders, and set up redirects for old URLs before switching.
On this page

Shopify website development in Delhi covers the same ground as anywhere else: a theme, a structured catalogue, checkout, apps and integrations. What changes in India are the parts around the edges, namely how you take payment, how you issue GST invoices, how cash on delivery behaves and what a migration from another platform involves. This guide walks through the build with those in mind, and every Shopify rule below was checked on Shopify's own pages in October 2026.

It does not compare Shopify with other platforms. If you are still choosing, read WooCommerce vs Shopify, Magento vs Shopify or BigCommerce vs Shopify first. For how to pick an agency and the Indian payment and consumer rules that apply to any store, see our guide to choosing an eCommerce development company in Delhi NCR.

What a Shopify build involves

The theme

A Shopify theme is built with Liquid, Shopify's templating language, plus HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JSON. Shopify's developer documentation describes Online Store 2.0 themes as ones where you can add and remove sections on any template and prepare the theme for app blocks, which lets merchants rearrange pages without code. Developers work locally with the Shopify CLI, check code with Theme Check and keep it in version control through GitHub.

The practical choice is between two routes:

  • A Theme Store theme, configured. Quicker and cheaper, with less design freedom. Sensible when your catalogue and brand are fairly standard.
  • A customised or custom-built theme. More effort, and worth it when the storefront itself must do something a stock theme does not: unusual product pages, custom filtering, a tight brand system, or complex content layouts.

The catalogue structure

Settle the structure of your products before design starts, because it shapes the product page. Shopify's help pages say each product can have up to three options and up to 2,048 variants. A shirt in six sizes and eight colours is 48 variants and sits comfortably inside that. A product with four configurable choices does not. For those, Shopify says you can use a third-party app or customise theme code to extract line item properties, so plan which route you will take.

Apps and custom code

Apps add features without custom development, and a private app can fill a gap where nothing suitable exists. The trade-off is weight. Shopify's performance guidance states that JavaScript from your theme or installed apps runs on the main thread and competes with the browser's ability to render content and respond to input, and that too much of it is one of the primary causes of poor Interaction to Next Paint and delayed Largest Contentful Paint. Before launch, list every app and tracking script and keep only those that earn their cost.

Integrations

Stock, orders and customers often need to flow to an ERP, accounting software, a courier or a CRM. Decide early which system holds the master record for each item, and let the others read from it.

What changes in India

Payments without Shopify Payments

Shopify's list of Shopify Payments countries does not include India, and Shopify's help page says that if your country is not listed you need to use a third-party payment provider. So a store based in India needs a third-party gateway. Shopify also states that third-party transaction fees apply on third-party gateways, and its pricing page lists that fee by plan. Your total payment cost is therefore the gateway's own charges plus Shopify's third-party fee, so compare both before choosing a plan. The rate depends on your plan and region, so check it on the pricing page rather than relying on any article, including this one.

Cash on delivery

COD is a manual payment method on Shopify. Orders that use a manual method are marked as unpaid on the Orders page, and after you receive the money you mark the order as paid and fulfil it. Shopify adds that you are not charged third-party transaction fees on manual payments. The work that remains is yours: reconciling courier remittances against orders, and deciding how you handle a parcel refused at the door and who pays the return shipping.

GST rates and invoices

Shopify's India GST page covers three points that affect the build:

  • Invoices. Shopify says it does not create a GST-compliant bill. For one, use a local third-party GST invoicing service or an app from the Shopify App Store.
  • CGST, SGST and IGST. Shopify cannot set multiple tax line items, but you can set up taxes to charge the sum of SGST and CGST for sales of goods within your state.
  • Different rates and HSN codes. For products at different GST rates, Shopify suggests tax overrides applied through hidden collections, one for each tax category. The HS tariff code field in the Shipping section of a product can store the HSN code.

Shopify tells merchants to consult a local tax professional about rates. If your turnover is above the e-invoicing limit, see the GST section of our ERP guide for the rules as checked in October 2026.

SEO and speed on Shopify

Shopify's SEO documentation says a store's sitemap.xml and robots.txt are generated automatically, canonical tags are added to pages, themes generate title tags that include your store name and include product schema markup, and SSL is on by default. You can edit title tags, meta descriptions and URLs for products, collections, pages and blog posts, and set up 301 redirects when you move or remove products. The developer's job is to build on those defaults without breaking them: clean heading structure, descriptive image alt text, sensible collection structure and fast pages.

For speed, Shopify's own guidance is specific: audit app and tracking scripts, defer anything that blocks rendering, never lazy-load the image visible at the top of the page and load images below it lazily. Our SEO services team can pick up from launch.

Moving an existing store to Shopify

Shopify's migration guide lists five routes: copy content by hand, import CSV files, use a migration app, hire a Shopify Partner or build a custom migration with the Shopify API. It says the data you can migrate includes products, customers, fulfilled historical orders, gift cards, blogs and pages, and it advises importing products first, then customers, then historical orders, so orders link to the right products and customers.

Shopify also warns that old links may not load because URL structures differ between platforms, and advises setting up redirects for important pages to help preserve search rankings. Build the redirect map from your old site's URL list before the switch, not after rankings drop. Avoid migrating just before a peak sales season.

Build it yourself or hire a developer?

A small catalogue with a standard theme can be set up in-house. Bring in a developer when you need any of these:

  • A customised or custom theme, or sections your theme does not offer.
  • A migration with many products, customer accounts or URLs.
  • Integration with an ERP, accounting software, a courier or a CRM.
  • Products with options beyond Shopify's limits, or personalisation.
  • GST invoicing and tax overrides set up and tested properly.
  • A speed audit of themes and apps.

What drives cost and timeline

  • How much of the design is custom rather than a configured theme.
  • Number of products, variants and collections, and how clean your data is.
  • Apps with monthly fees, and any private apps that must be built.
  • Integrations and their testing.
  • Migration size and redirect mapping.
  • Your Shopify plan and third-party payment costs, which continue after launch.
  • How quickly you provide product data, images and approvals.

Choosing a Shopify developer

  • Ask for live stores they built and run them through a speed test on a phone.
  • Ask who will do the work and who will answer your questions.
  • Check that the Shopify account, domain and payment account stay in your name.
  • Ask how they keep theme code under version control and document apps.
  • Ask how they test payments, COD, GST invoices and returns before launch.
  • Agree support after launch: response times, fixes and updates.

How Mindrops works on this

Mindrops is a Shopify partner. We build custom Shopify storefronts and themes, private apps and integrations with ERP, CRM, marketing and logistics tools, migrate stores to Shopify while keeping data, URLs and SEO continuity in view, and support the store after launch. Our service page also lists Shopify Plus and Hydrogen for headless storefronts. The client owns the source code, store accounts and infrastructure. Our head office is in Netaji Subhash Place, New Delhi.

See our Shopify development service, or get a quote with your catalogue size, current platform and launch date. We respond as quickly as possible.

Conclusion

A good Shopify build looks ordinary on launch day: products load fast, payment and COD orders reconcile, GST invoices come out right and old URLs still work. Getting there means settling the Indian payment and tax setup, the product structure and the app list before the design is finished, not after.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Shopify store connect to our ERP, accounting software or courier?
Usually yes. Shopify exposes APIs and its App Store has ready-made connectors, and a developer can build a private app where none fits. The decision that matters is which system is the source of truth for stock and prices, so you do not maintain the same numbers in two places.
How do we sell personalised or made-to-order products?
Shopify's documentation says that for products with more than three options or 2,048 variants you can use a third-party app or customise your theme code to capture line item properties, such as an engraving text field. Which route is better depends on how the order information must reach your production team.
Can the same Shopify site hold our blog and company pages?
Yes. Pages and blog posts are part of Shopify's online store, and you can edit their titles, meta descriptions and URLs. If you run a very large publishing operation, you may prefer a separate content system, but most business sites do not need one.
What should we have ready before development starts?
A product sheet with names, SKUs, prices, weights, images and tax details; your logo and brand assets; return, shipping and privacy policies; your GST details; and a decision on which couriers and payment methods you will offer. Missing product data is the most common cause of delay.
